Willie Nelson wasn't hallucinating when he saw a police car pull up to his tour bus on Monday.
The country singer-songwriter was charged with drug possession earlier this week when marijuana and magic mushrooms were found inside his tour bus during a routine police inspection in Louisiana.
State police spokesman Willie Williams said the bus was stopped early on Monday morning near Lafayette.
He added, "When the door was opened and the trooper began to speak to the driver, he smelled the strong odor of marijuana. There was no trouble whatsoever. They were all cooperative."
Police seized 0.7kg of marijuana and 91grams of mushrooms, which causes the user to hallucinate.
The 73-year-old singer and four tour crew members - including his sister Bobbie, 75 - were issued citations for the drugs and released. The driver had his commercial driving privileges suspended in addition to the citation.
The country singer could face six months in jail and an unspecified fine, police said.
Nelson, who appeared in Jessica Simpson's video for "These Boots are Made for Walkin," has always publicly expressed his support for drug use and has campaigned for the legalization of cannabis.
Nelson's spokesman had no information about the arrest.
"Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville recently revealed he had failed to keep up with the country legend, during a cannabis smoking session.
He told Playboy magazine, "When Willie Nelson passes you a joint, you don't say no. I was on Mars for six hours."
Nelson became famous in the 70s for his involvement in the outlaw country movement, which was influenced by jazz, folk and rock music.
