Zachary Quinto is thrilled he decided to return for 'American Horror Story: Asylum'.

The actor was initially hesitant about returning to the series which this year changes location and characters from a haunted Los Angeles mansion to an institution for the criminally insane in the 1960s but is delighted creator Ryan Murphy talked him into it.

He told America's TV Guide: ''I was [hesitant]. But once Ryan explained to me what he wanted to do, and we talked about how all of us would play different characters, it became infinitely more appealing to me. I'm so glad I decided to double down.''

However, while he loves working on the show, Zachary admitted filming in the fake psychiatric institution was quite ''oppressive''.

He explained: ''There's something very terrifying about the idea of insanity. And the set - though they've built such a beautiful space for us to play in - is incredibly oppressive. You can imagine what it would be like to be exposed to that relentless institutionalisation in the 1960s and that's pretty scary in and of itself.''

'American Horror Story: Asylum' will air on Tuesday October 30 at 10pm on FX.
