Cate Blanchett's husband used to buy her domestic appliances as gifts.

The 'Notes on a Scandal' actress - who has sons Dashiel, 11, Roman, seven, and three-year-old Ignatius with spouse Andrew Upton - believes her partner gave her the unexciting presents because he wanted her to take up a hobby.

She said: ''My husband went through a phase of giving me vacuum cleaners, sewing machines and Mixmasters. It's ironic. He is encouraging me to develop a hobby, I think.''

However, the 42-year-old star wasn't offended by the gifts because she has previously been advised to do her own chores in order not to be swept away by fame.

She added to the new edition of Britain's Harpers Bazaar magazine: ''An actress once advised me, 'Make sure you do your own laundry - it will keep you honest.' ''

Cate also admitted she is desperate to portray a villain in a James Bond movie, citing Lotte Lenya's 'From Russia With Love' character Rosa Klebb as her favourite.

Asked if she wanted a Bond role, she said: ''Oh, God, yes! I'd be there in a heartbeat.

''I love Lotte Lenya. She had a club foot and a limp. I'm not a purist in that way.''
