Adele felt like ''someone put a curtain over'' her throat when she suffered a haemorrhage.
The 'Rolling in the Deep' hitmaker underwent vocal surgery in November and has now opened up about her ordeal, explaining the procedure she underwent to repair the damage.
She said: ''It felt like someone put a curtain over my throat. It felt like something popped in my throat.
''I had laser surgery. They put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp, and kind of laser your haemorrhage back together and fix it.''
The 23-year-old singer resorted to using her mobile phone to communicate - and was particularly delighted when she found an application that expressed what she truly wanted to say.
She told '60 Minutes' host Anderson Cooper: ''I had an application on my phone that you type the words into it and then it speaks it.
''But the great thing is I love to swear. Most of [the apps] you can't swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I'm still really getting my point across.''
Adele - who will make her comeback at the Grammy Awards later this month - knows she has to be careful not to push herself too far in the future or she risks suffering problems again.
She said: ''If I decide to go on a 200-date world tour, it would happen again.''
