Susan Boyle has spoken about her secret battle with depression.

The 'Wilds Horses' singer admitted she is prone to mood swings and fits of anger, saying her condition has its roots in her childhood, when she was bullied.

She said: "I can be up and down like a yo-yo. I can be depressed.

"I know I'm taking a big chance telling people this but you have to be honest. I used to be made a fool of at school. It was psychological bullying and that leaves a scar and it also cultivates a lot of anger.

"When people are a little bit slow others pick at them. My life was made absolute hell."

The 47-year-old star - who led a lonely and reclusive life before she auditioned for UK reality TV talent show 'Britain's Got Talent', after which her audition video became an internet hit across the world - released her debut album, 'I Dreamed A Dream', three weeks ago and has already sold over three million copies, breaking a number of chart records worldwide.

Susan- who suffers from learning difficulties after she was deprived of oxygen at birth - added that performing onstage is the only place she feels comfortable, and can engage with an audience.

She told The Sun newspaper: "I can be a bit funny after being tired but whenever I go on stage I forget all about that.

"I feel I've got a communication with the audience. I'm told I'm a different person on stage."

Susan has previously told how she was beaten "every day" as a schoolchild, and felt "left behind" by the education system in her native Scotland.

She's telling it like it is. She has some mild brain damage but is one very talented, determined and courageous lady.
It's time for everyone to commend her and stop the ridicule. She's an inspiration for everyone that suffers from disabilities.

So many of us have gone through this same struggle. Many thanks susan It's very refreshing to hear the truth.I'm actually crying my eyes at the moment and it's making it difficult to go into detail about how similar our stories actually are.I was labled with all kinds of learning disabilities and had trouble relating with other kids, finally had to change schools.Music is the only thing that has inspired me to carry on. I still havnt found my nich and I am now 29 years old and still having flash backs of bulling, similar to a war vetran,it stunts your confidence and growth and it's exciting to hear that with some people it just makes their will stronger.Keep on keeping on you are a wonderful woman Susan.

Susan is such an inspiration to all of us! When I first saw her on UTUBE I was drawn to tears of joy..her voice is a special gift from God. I am so proud of her to have the courage to find a way to share her talent with the world. Notice how special things bring the world closer? The only thing I asked my husband for Christmas was her CD (I got it). I will be her fan forever! 47 is not that old, so we should be able to enjoy her golden voice for years to come. Thank you Susan and all those that have helped you come this far.

It sounds to me like she suffers from some sort of Bipolar syndrome? I know, I have it!! I know all about the depression, mania, mood swings and the rage. It's horrible, especially when you've lived like that 30 some odd years because of being misdiagnosed in the first place!
If people can't stand the truth, then that's their problem. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard I Dreamed a Dream on U-tube.incredible.I was in awe!!
It only matters what you think of yourself Susan, no one else can do that for you. Be who YOU are, not what someone else thinks you should be.

perhaps she should see about geting on some medication to help her live with depression and mood swings, there are several meds that would tremendously improve the quality of her life and no more acting out.

I've often heard it said that "the best revenge is success". I'm sure that most of the people who bullied and made fun of Susan are not any where near the success that she has become.

Isn't it sad that what molds us happens when we are most vunerable - as children. Susan has now the envy of many people. She has a talent most do not pocess; the ability to communicate through music. She is to be commended and now those very people who hurt her as a child should be remorseful. There is help for those who suffer with depression. I hope she gets it and continues to flourish.

And one wonders why Hadrian built a wall to contain these people. Enough said.

I can still see the people laughing at her audition. They are not laughing now. Susan Boyle has one of the most remarkable voices that will never be forgotten. I am 52, I bought myself and my parents her CD for Christmas. She is amazing, and if God willing she ever comes to Evansville, Indiana, I want front row seats! She has so much courage and pride. She can overcome her depression. The song "I Dreamed A Dream", looks like yours has came true. Be strong and God Bless You. I AM A BIG FAN

I listen to Susan Boyles I Dream a Dream when I need a pick me up. I think she has an awesome voice, she represents everyone of us in life, frumpy as they say, but she is one beautiful lady and I so identify with her. People are afraid to talk about depression, and the way others have treat them in life. I think it is great she is willing to step up to the plate and state her situation. I think she is an awesome talented Lady.

I'm glad Susan had a chance to realize her Dream and that Simon Cowell did the right thing and took her under his wing after having obvious "egg on his face" during her audition! Proves that he is a good man after all! Susan has several wonderful, heartful songs on her albumn I hope she keeps singing and this isn't all we hear from her! Being slow, having depression, these are not reasons to hide away a talent such as hers! She has lifted up the world with her voice of an angel.I hope she will continue to share it!

Susan Boyle is a true inspiration! Her symptoms could also describe classic Bipolar. It sounds as though the road has been tough for her and there is a great deal to be admired. Keep it up Susan!

I, too, applaud Susan's courage because I also fully understand the scars of being bullied, the kind that spills over to depression and anger later in life. May God always be with Susan and with us struggling for self-love and identity, stripped away by those so insecure who feel the need to destroy others.

I hope she listens carefully to the great gift she was given. Her voice is inspiring and I love her. The greatest victory is to rise above the past and look forward, not behind. That is past. Susan is our new hero with a powerful spirit and ability to change lives with her music. She was adorable with Donny Osmond -- another genuine person! Please record another CD. I've memorized every note and want more, more more! Be your beautiful self, Susan.

Dear Susan,
When my daughter was in middle school she was bullied mercilessly because she was overweight. I pleaded with counselors and teachers but they just seemed to think it was part of growing up. Katy still is suffering reprocussions from her experiences and I pray for her constantly. God Bless You Susan. " Blessed are the meek for they Shall inherit the Earth. " Our Lord gave us this message in the Beatitudes and when I see you on television, I am reminded of this truth. Merry Christmas!

Susan had the courage to follow her passion against many obstacles. It must have been so hard to keep on trying. She is so courageous to tell others about her challenge with depression. I have the same problem and I admire her so much. She is loved and perfect just as she is. Bless you, Susan.

I have the greatest amount of respect admiration and compassion for her courage and determination, beating every obstacles around her.I can relate to her struggles with depression and childhood sufferings because I too I've been constantly ridiculed, mentally emotionally and physically bullied at school when first arrived in the United States labeled as "faggot" because of my name, unaware to them that my name is a combined French name which happens to be a male name and I'm very proud of it.But I'm not here to talk about my childhood trauma..I just want to congratulate Susan on her success. You're a great inspiration for all of us including myself.God Bless You,Susan..You're the best!

Dear Susan. I too was beaten with straps by nuns at a convent school 70 years ago in Boxburg South Africa. The result is depression anxiety and neurosis. Fortunately at the end of the first year my mother was told that I was mentally deficient and would stay back a class so my mother transfered me to another school. Years later I passed my librarianship exams with honors but I still suffer mentally from the past experience. Medication has helped me. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience with your singing!

Susan, my wife and I love your voice. We are both fans of yours. You singing always sends cold shivers down my spine. I have a favorite song that I would love to hear you sing.It is another Dream song, and it is for a man's voice. I believe you could sing this piece and make a hit out of it. The song is from the man from LaMancha."To Dream the Impossible dream." The best of luck to you and your career.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

We await your first Christmas album.
