Burt Reynolds has been treated for painkiller addiction.

The 73-year-old actor sought help from rehabilitation clinic Florida's Hanley Center in West Palm Beach after realizing he had become dependant on prescription medication, but has now left the facility.

His manager said in a statement: "After a recent back surgery, Mr. Reynolds felt like he was going through hell and after a while, realized he was a prisoner of prescription pain pills.

"He checked himself into rehab in order to regain control of his life. Mr. Reynolds hopes his story will help others in a similar situation.

"He hopes they will not try to solve the problem by themselves, but realize that sometimes it is too tough to do on their own and they should seek help, as he did."

Burt's manager added he was unsure when the star - who appeared in 'Deliverance' and 'Boogie Nights' - entered or was released from the centre.

Burt admitted he was reliant on sleeping medication Halcion in the 1980s.

He used the medication after he was diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder, a painful condition which affected his jaw.
