Gillian Anderson wishes she could "control" her accent.

The Chicago-born actress grew up in London and admits she finds it bizarre that her dialect switches rapidly from British to American without her intending to.

She said: "Even on the phone my accent will change. Part of me wishes I could control it but I can't."

"I just slip into one or the other. When I moved to the States I tried to cling on to my British accent because it made different."

The "X-Files" star insists she is glad that she has lived in several different cities because it has made her a more rounded person.

She explained: "I moved a lot for university and work but I never thought it was a negative thing."

"I thought how lucky I was to have had formative years growing up in London. A lot of Americans never set foot outside America. It can be an inward-looking country."
