Jessica Simpson has been dropped by her record label. The star's short-lived career as a country artist could be over as it has been confirmed she is no longer represented by Sony Nashville.

A representative for Jessica, 28, insists the arrangement with the company was only temporary and will now focus her attentions on pop.

The spokesperson said: "She was on loan to Sony Nashville for her country album. She is and has always been an Epic artist and continues to be on Epic's label."

Although Jessica's re-launch as a country artist in 2008 was controversial - particularly among the genre's traditionalists, who didn't like her pop star past - her album "Do You Know" reached number one in the US country charts and sold over 100,000 copies.

At the time she said: "I am a country girl. I grew up in Texas, and country music was what I listened to. I think there is a strength in female country artists."

Jessica had a rough time embarking on her new country career.

She was booed at her first country music concert last July, snubbed from the Country Music Association Awards in November and was heavily criticized while supporting Rascal Flatts earlier this year.
