A letter written by Britain's late Princess Diana on her honeymoon is set to be auctioned. The princess wrote to royal footman Mark Simpson two days after her July 1981 wedding to Prince Charles to thank him for looking after her while she stayed at London's Buckingham Palace during the run up to her big day.

In the note - which is expected to fetch up to $5,200 when it is sold at auctioneers Reeman Dansie in Colchester, Essex - the princess admits feeling "terribly lonely" in the days before her wedding.

Diana wrote: "I just wanted to thank you for all the kindness and patience you've showed towards me since I moved into Buckingham Palace."

"My stay was made so much easier by your company as it got terrible lonely and we had so many laughs for that I can't thank you enough."

The letter is accompanied by a rare royal wedding presentation photograph in its original green leather frame. The picture was taken by the late Lord Lickfield and is expected to sell for between $5,200 and $6,000.

It is engraved: "With best wishes, Diana, July 29, 1981."

Auctioneer James Grinter said: "Diana's letter gives a unique insight into her feelings leading up to the royal wedding and it is also rare for an original Lichfield wedding photograph to come on the market."

Earlier this year, a collection of letters written by Diana to her former nanny Mary Clarke sold for £24,265 or around $36,300.

Among the four notes was one in which Diana revealed she felt like "an elephant" when dancing.

Diana, who famously danced with John Travolta at the White House in 1985, wrote when she was just 17: "My love of life is dancing, things like tap, modern, ballet and jazz. Also I love singing, even though my voice sounds awful. And watching me dance is like watching an elephant, so no one does."
