Uma Thurman used to clash with ex-husband Ethan Hawke over her desire to be a working mother.

The 'Kill Bill' actress - who has two children, nine-year-old Maya and six-year-old Roan, with the actor - was determined to have a career as well as a family but Ethan told her it was impossible.

The New York-based star said: "He claimed I couldn't be a full-time mother and actress and I always insisted I could. But I couldn't. I really try to give all of myself. I wouldn't even read a script that wasn't shooting in New York because I needed to be home."

Uma eventually split from Ethan in 2003 and filed for divorce in 2004. She is now reportedly engaged to banker Arpad Busson but admits the dating game can be hard work.

The blonde beauty - who plays a relationship counselor in her new film 'The Accidental Husband' - said: "It seems like the entire culture has changed. People don't want to meet people in a bar. I also think that anybody you meet in a bar should stay in a bar."

"It's so hard for people to make contact these days - especially if you're a mature grown-up who cares what happens in your relationship and isn't just out for a spring-break type fling."
