Sally Field opens up to Oprah the abuse she had suffered at the hands of her stepfather. In the March issue of Oprah's 'O' magazine, the 'Flying Nun' star reveals her love-hate relationship with the man her mother married.
"He was really big and handsome," the 61-year-old actress says. "I was both terrified of him and madly in love with him. My stepfather was both cruel and loving, and therefore, our relationship was very confusing. I felt I was in danger all the time."
Field also recalls the time when the stepfather, Jock Mahoney, threw her across the yard. But despite the perpetual threat of violence in the air, she is also grateful to him because he taught her to stand up for herself.
"When I was 14 or 15, I would literally stand on the coffee table to look this six-foot, five-inch man in the face and scream at him. I couldn't swallow my feelings, or something in me would have died."
Field is currently starring in TV drama series 'Brothers and Sisters.' She is a two-time Emmy award winner and two-time Golden Globe winner. She had gained fame playing Sister Bertrille in 'The Flying Nun' in 1967.
