You're always bound to have a good time and have a few laughs with Borat, no matter where you go, unless you're one of the people the joke is on.

It's been reported that Borat - aka British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen - narrowly escaped going to jail after he stole furniture from a New York hotel for his new movie.

The fake Kazakhstan TV reporter infuriated staff at New York's Wellington Hotel by causing chaos when he checked in last year.

A hotel source told the New York Post, "Sacha checked in as a travel writer from Kazakhstan and asked for a special rate, $100 a night, which we gave him. Then he tried to get it down to $30. Staff caught a film crew secretly filming Borat unpacking in an elevator as if it were his room. It was unbelievable."

Borat's behavior went from bad to worse when hotel management caught him carrying furniture out of the hotel.

The source said, "In the middle of the night, his crew started carrying furniture out of the hotel. The night manager stopped them and it turned out the furniture had been taken from a Sheraton hotel in New Jersey."

Hotel staff quickly decided they had enough of Borat and called the police.

The source added, "When the police were called, Borat ran out of the hotel as fast as he could."
