At a concert in the San Juan stadium, while singing "Asignatura Pendienta," Ricky Martin held up his middle finger during his reference to "a photo with Bush."
According to an AP interview with Martin on Thursday, he was quoted as saying, "My convictions of peace and life go beyond any government and political agenda and as long as I have a voice onstage and offstage, I will always condemn war and those who promulgate it."
Martin was one of the headliners at President Bush's 2001 inauguration.
Martin, like many other entertainers, has made his stand on the war in Iraq very clear. In Puerto Rico, where Martin is highly esteemed as a great entertainer, feelings are mixed when it comes to Capital Hill. Puerto Rico, which the U. S. seized at the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, doesn't pay federal taxes, but also has no voting privileges. However, Puerto Rican citizens are considered U. S. citizens and can be drafted into the military.
Two-time Grammy Award winner, Martin, is also Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF. He started the Ricky Martin Foundation, an advocacy group created for children all over the world to eliminate child trafficking and to provide education, health services, and safe environments.
