Michelle Pfeiffer is set to star in the latest movie version of the hit Broadway musical "Hairspray."
The actress is reportedly in final negotiations with New Line Cinema to join John Travolta and Queen Latifah for the big-screen adaptation of the stage show - which in turn is based on John Walters' 1988 comedy about teenagers obsessed with a television dance show.
Pfeiffer will play the story's villain, Velma von Tussel, a former beauty queen-turned-bitter-television producer, played by Blondie singer Deborah Harry in the original film.
Director Adam Shankman said: "I'm going to dress and wig Michelle to death on this one."
Oscar-nominated Pfeiffer is no stranger to singing on screen. She has already starred in the musical "Grease 2" and took to the mic for "The Fabulous Baker Boys".
Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman - who wrote the Tony award-winning musical score for the Broadway version - are planning to pen a new song for Pfeiffer.
The film begins shooting in Toronto, Canada, in September, after plans to partly shoot in Baltimore, where the story is set, were scrapped.
"Hairspray" is due to be released in December 2007.
