Mel Gibson surprised theatergoers last night by attending the premiere of "Viva La Diva" in London.

The "Braveheart" actor watched the music and dance extravaganza, starring ballet dancer Darcey Bussell and opera singer Katherine Jenkins, at London's Hammersmith Apollo theatre before mingling with guests and dancers after the show.

Wearing a long dark coat and multi-colored scarf, the 51-year-old actor - who caused controversy when he made anti-Semitic remarks after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in July 2006 - posed for photos and chatted to Bussell and Jenkins before leaving.

The Hollywood star was among a host of famous faces to attend last night's event. Designer Julien McDonald, Rolf Harris, comic duo Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, veteran British newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald and Julian Lloyd Webber were also in attendance.

"Viva La Diva" features Bussell dancing to music by Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse, Audrey Hepburn and Moira Shearar, while Jenkins performs songs by Doris Day, Judy Garland, Maria Callas and Marilyn Monroe.
