In Australia to promote the latest of the Bourne films, Matt Damon - star of "The Bourne Ultimatum" said Hollywood is just getting better.

The Hollywood star told Sydney Morning Herald, "I think films have gotten better since everything started to go off the rails a few years ago. Suddenly all these people are coming out with things to say."

Damon said filmmakers were making smarter movies that grappled with contemporary political issues, including two he had acted in - "Syriana" and "The Good Shepherd."

In the upcoming U.S. presidential elections, Damon is supporting the Democrat contender Barack Obama. "[George] Clooney called him and said, 'Senator, I'd like to support you in any way I can, including staying home - because you never know how the Right in our country is going to characterize or characterize [one's] participation."'

Damon was thrilled by the record-breaking opening for The Bourne Ultimatum in the U.S. at the weekend. It took $81 million AUD ($70 million USD), more than any James Bond movie.

Bourne said his Aussie experience had been nice including primarily interviews with local broadcasters and dinners.
