The 'Nine' actress - who split with her New York Yankees baseball star boyfriend Alex Rodriguez earlier this month - forgot her troubles with the lavish bash at her Californian home, which had been given a festive make-over with strands of tree light, reindeer statues in the garden and valet parking attendants dressed in Santa outfits.
The 41-year-old British director - whose 2002 movie 'Swept Away' starring his ex-wife Madonna, 51, flopped at the cinema and went straight to DVD in the UK - said he wasn't upset by the critics, because you have to do some things wrong in order to know what works.
He said: "'Swept Away' was always going to have a limited audience. The idea was that it was going to be a small film... but you can't do small films with the ex."
The 'Twentysomething' singer - who is engaged to Sophie Dahl, the author and former model - said he tried to impress her with his knowledge of books when they first met.
He said: "We hit it off immediately. I think we knew emotionally that we would become good friends. We just started talking about books - I was reading David Mitchells 'Cloud Atlas' at the time - and certain other stuff that we were into."
The 60-year-old actress - who stars in new romantic comedy 'It's Complicated' where she plays a woman who has an affair with her ex-husband - said she doesn't mind acting out sex scenes because it's "authentic".
She said: "Sex scenes, love scenes. Yes, at this age it's unusual for somebody to do a love scene, to be making love. Yeah, that is unusual. But that is just how benighted we are. Because, you know, we still are alive. It's you and I, baby. It's authentic."
