Kevin Federline threw an early birthday party for his two sons by ex-wife Britney Spears on Sunday.

Kevin - who is currently fighting the singer for custody of the boys - held the bash at his Californian home while Britney was making her disastrous comeback performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Kevin's assistants were seen picking up balloons, banners and an ice cream cake, all of which were themed after the animated movie 'Cars', for Jayden James, who turns one tomorrow, and Sean Preston, who celebrates his second birthday on Friday.

Britney's parents, father Jamie and mother Lynne, were among the 20 guests at the bash, where partygoers enjoyed the use of Kevin's swimming pool.

On Saturday, Jamie and Lynne visited their grandsons while Britney was partying in Las Vegas with Paris Hilton, P. Diddy and 50 Cent.

Last month, Kevin - who has two other children from a previous relationship - filed for primary custody of Sean and Jayden, just two weeks after his divorce from Britney was finalized. He is hoping he can show cause for being awarded primary physical custody following Britney's recent erratic behavior.

A source said: "Kevin is worried Britney is exposing the boys to unnecessary risk. His lawyer hopes to get Kevin primary custody."
