Kate Hudson claims ego and pride prevent people enjoying friendships with their former partners.

The 'Fool's Gold' actress says she has remained on good terms with her ex-husband Chris Robinson - with whom she has a four-year-old son, Ryder - and claims only people's injured pride is what usually stops them from getting along with their old flames.

She said: "It's such a shame when people let their egos get in the way of what's the most important thing. I feel like a lot of time someone's pride is affected when a relationship ends."

The 29-year-old actress added that Ryder has always been her and Chris' main priority, which was one of the reasons they decided to call an end to their five-year-marriage in 2006.

She added to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres: "We did it the right way, which is we knew it wasn't right to stay together so we wanted it to be great for Ryder and we got a happy, happy boy."

"We spend a lot of time together. We love our baby. With both of us working all the time and away and traveling it makes it great for Ryder."
