There was a time when it looked like Kevin Federline wouldn't have a shot in Hollywood of getting full custody of his children.
But then Britney began an ever-continuing meltdown and K-Fed found work at a radio station, set up a family home and stopped trying to milk his 15 minutes of fame with bachelor trips to Vegas.
Because of Britney's frequent erratic behavior - just last week she was stripping down to her underwear and swimming in the ocean off the highway in Malibu - K-Fed is convinced that Sean Preston and Jayden James would be better in his care, away from the spotlight and cheetos.
According to OK! magazine - who are preparing to reveal the true extent of Britney's downfall in a new issue - Kevin is talking to lawyers and putting in the ground work to become a full-time single father.
A source told the magazine, "Kevin is worried about Sean and Jayden's safety. He had heard bits and pieces of what was going on from Brit's mother, Lynne [Spears] and from the bodyguards but has been trying to focus on getting along with her and didn't want to believe she had completely lost it."
Britney's one-time constant companion, her cousin Alli Sims, is also working against her. The reportedly aspiring singer is siding with Fedex and giving him information from life in Britney's bubble.
One of Britney's 'friends' told OK!, "Alli gave specific instances where Brit couldn't handle having the kids. Kevin was angry at Britney for putting his kids in jeopardy and immediately phoned his lawyer to investigate the claims further. He couldn't believe she had gotten so out of control."
Kevin has allegedly already been in contact with his estranged wife's lawyers and is preparing an official meeting.
Kevin has two older children with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson.
