James McAvoy could have been a Catholic priest if he wasn't an actor. The "Atonement" star confesses he planned to become a priest when he was younger because he wanted to travel the world.

The 29-year-old actor tells Closer magazine, "I considered becoming a priest very seriously. I wanted to travel the world - and as a young Catholic it seemed the easiest way."

"By the time I turned 16, I realized that I was only in it for selfish reasons, and there were easier ways to explore to world."

But his real reason for discarding his religious dream, "I didn't want to sacrifice the ladies!"

McAvoy, who is married to English actress Anne Marie Duff, says that despite gaining fame, he and his wife don't like to live large as what typical of a Hollywood lifestyle.

He says they live in a small apartment and share a Nissan Micra car.

He says, "We don't have a lavish lifestyle - I'm not earning millions, and I wouldn't want to live in L.A. I love visiting my family in Glasgow, going to watch Celtic football team play and having some traditional Glaswegian food."
