Isaiah Washington is not taking his departure from "Grey's Anatomy" like a man.
In fact, the actor is telling anyone who will listen that he has been treated unfairly and didn't deserve to be laid off from the top rated show, despite creating a large amount of controversy in late 2006 and early 2007.
According to many sources, including former co-stars on the medical drama set, Isaiah called follow star T.R. Knight a "f*****" during an argument. Then, at the Golden Globe Awards, he denied that the slur ever took place. T.R. and Katherine Heigl have both been vocal about the incident, going as far as allegedly encouraging the ABC network to fire the star.
Now that Isaiah is unemployed, he is claiming that the decision is the wrong one and the wrong person has been fired. He told the Houston Chronicle in an exclusive interview, "They fired the wrong guy. I have to clear my name. I'll start from the beginning. I'm telling everything. So here's the truth."
According to Isaiah, the 'f word' was thrown around in a disagreement but not used in the context which has been reported. He continued, "I used the word during a disagreement with Patrick [Dempsey]. I apologized for that. We shook hands and went back to work. I knew T.R. was gay, but I would never attack him because of his sexual orientation. That's stupid. I've been working with lesbians and gays for 21 years in this business."
Despite his questionable reputation in the public arena over the incident with T.R., Isaiah has continued to bad-mouth the actor and claims that the entire situation has been used his favor.
He stated, "I feel all of this was about him getting a raise and getting his character to stop being perceived as a dopey, kooky kind of character. He perceives himself as a leading man. That's why you could see the change this past season. That was his whole impetus behind this. And I was used and I was exploited...to raise T.R.'s profile. I may be wrong, but that's how I feel about it."
Since the initial fight, Isaiah has been in rehab for anger management and attended therapy. He says that he kept up his part of the deal, but ABC failed in theirs.
He said, "I did everything they told me to do, including not saying anything, and then they didn't renew my contract. That's not fair. I was not fired for making homophobic slurs. I did everything I said I would do. I offered to go to counseling, to do a public service announcement. I wanted everyone to know I was remorseful."
As far as Isaiah is concerned, "I'm not angry. I'm disappointed."
Other cast members, including T.R., Katherine, Patrick and Ellen Pompeo have all had their contracts renewed.
