Newly unemployed Isaiah Washington is wondering how he could have kept his job.

The former "Grey's Anatomy" star will not be returning for the third season of the smash hit show. Real life drama began behind the scenes of the medical drama after an on-set argument between Isaiah and T.R. Knight that resulted in a sexual slur.

The show's network, ABC, was encouraged by some outraged fans to fire Isaiah immediately. However, instead the producers gave the actor a list of ways to improve his behavior and image.

The 43-year-old star told "Entertainment Weekly." "I'm saddened by the outcome. I did everything that the producers and the network asked me to do. I came back under great duress and stress, and thought I was doing the job I was hired to do."

Isaiah said he had been personally contacted by the show's creator to inform him of the new line-up.

He said, "[Grey's creator] Shonda Rhimes called me on Thursday of last week and told me that I would not be returning to the show. Just like she personally called me and invited me to the show. It was full circle."

All other cast members, including Patrick Dempsey, Katherine Heigl and Justin Chambers will be returning. Kate Walsh will have her own spin-off show.
