Howard K. Stern has long been depicted in the media as a money hungry bad guy.
However the one-time companion of the late Anna Nicole Smith says that he does not have the bank balance to back up the claims against him.
Stern, who formally acted as Smith's lawyer until they began an affair, has been accused of cashing in to the Playmate's death with media interviews.
However, Stern told Us Weekly magazine, "I am in debt and basically broke. There's this impression out there that I am somehow making money off of Anna's death. It couldn't be further from the truth."
Stern was the initial legal guardian of Smith's daughter Dannielynn, however after paternity tests proved Larry Birkhead to be the biological father, he gave up custody.
Both Stern and Birkhead are suing a Smith biographer who claimed that they engaged in a homosexual affair.
