Pierce Brosnan is to be the new voice of Thomas the Tank Engine. The 54-year-old actor - who played suave spy James Bond for seven years - will narrate the popular children's TV series 'Thomas and Friends', based on Reverend W.V. Awdry's books about a busy railway station on the Island of Sodor.

Pierce is the latest in a long-line of distinguished talents, including former Beatle Ringo Starr, Alec Baldwin and Michael Brandon, to take on the role since the TV series first aired in 1984.

Brosnan said: "One of my fondest memories as a father was sharing the stories of 'Thomas the Tank Engine' and watching the series with my children when they were young.

"I am thrilled by the opportunity to be the narrator for this beloved series, following in the shoes of so many famous names and helping introduce 'Thomas and Friends' to many more generations of children."

Pierce has signed up with production company HIT Entertainment to narrate three TV series and three DVD specials.

The actor has already started recording his first show 'Thomas and Friends: The Great Discovery', which will be released on DVD in 2008.

HIT Entertainment CEO Bruce Steinberg said: "Brosnan brings a wealth of acting experience to the role as well as a unique voice that children around the world will recognize and trust."

'Thomas and Friends' has enjoyed worldwide success, with 140 countries broadcasting the hugely successful children's show.
