It's hard to imagine music artist David Bowie contributing his rock 'n' roll voice for a more serious tone in a popular kids' animated show. The music legend begged producers to let him voice a part for "Spongebob SquarePants" because his six-year-old daughter, Alexandria, is a big fan of the squishy, yellow character under the sea.
The 59-year-old wrote on his blog, "At last, I've hit the Holy Grail of animation gigs."
Bowie will play the role of Lord Royal Highness in a new special episode. SpongeBob is a friendly sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, with his pet snail Gary.
This is not the first time Bowie has worked with fantastical creatures. The singer starred in Jim Henson's 1986 cult classic "Labyrinth," as Jareth, the king of the goblins.
Wearing heavy make-up and singing several songs especially written for the film, he appeared alongside a teenage Jennifer Connelly - who went on to win an Oscar in 2003 for her role in "A Beautiful Mind."
