Cate Blanchett says film producer George Lucas is the "Vidal Sassoon" of the movie world.

Blanchett - who plays villain Irina Spalko in Lucas' 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' - has revealed it was Lucas' idea for her character to have a hard, angular black bob haircut, and the producer carefully styled the whole cast's locks.

The 39-year-old actress - who has blonde hair naturally - said: "The haircut came from George Lucas. Lucas has been really instrumental in all the haircuts for all the characters, so he was already quite clear in the way my hair was being cut. It was a wig that I wear, but he is the Vidal Sassoon of the cinema world."

Vidal Sassoon is a legendary British hairdresser, responsible for styling some of the world's biggest stars and founding his own haircare range. Spalko is the arch nemesis of Indy in the film, set in 1957, and battles with him over the titular crystal skull which she wants to return to the Soviet Union.

'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' opens in cinemas worldwide this weekend.
