Bono is "an inch away" from being a drug addict. The U2 frontman goes to church to tame his "wild streak" and stop him giving in to his darker desires.

He said: "I've been surrounded a lot in my personal life by addiction - in the last few years, in particular. I know a lot of people - not least the bass player in the band - who have had to deal with their demons in courageous ways."

Bono fears U2 will split up. The singer says he and his bandmates - guitarist The Edge, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and bassist Adam Clayton - are determined to enjoy their upcoming world tour because they fear it could be their last.

He said: "We want to play for each other as much as we want to play for the crowd this time. You just don't know how long you are going to be doing this. When we walk out on stage, the hairs on people's necks go up - but what people don't know is that the hairs on our necks go up too."

U2 want Brad Pitt to star in a movie about their lives. The band's guitarist The Edge thinks the Hollywood hunk would be the perfect person to portray him if a film about the Irish group was ever made.

Edge, 47, said: "We'd want it to be realistic, we don't want the usual things, so Brad Pitt would play me. We want to be realistic, you know, you don't want to do the Hollywood thing."

Bono has joked he wants to join Girls Aloud. The U2 singer is keen to become a member of the British band after seeing them perform at the BRIT Awards last night.

Bono said: "I want to be in Girls Aloud. But seriously, I think they are at the cutting edge of pop music. They are a great band and they deserve to be center stage. They have everything a pop band should have - songs, the look, it's all there."
